About South Australian Maritime Museum

Discover stories of exploration and maritime adventure as the South Australian Maritime Museum celebrates the human history of our oceans and rivers.

Our Museum tells stories of South Australians and the sea, of Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin charting our coasts, the tragedy of the Star of Greece and the wrecks that terrified voyagers, the waves of emigrants who voyaged to Australia between the 1930’s and the 1960’s, the boat builders, wharfies and mud punchers who shaped Port Adelaide, even the Port River dolphins.

Located in the historic Port Adelaide precinct, the museum is home to the oldest nautical collection in Australia. Renowned for its innovative approach to maritime history and education, the museum incorporates the historic Bond Store with three floors of exhibitions including the beloved Active II ketch, the Port Adelaide Lighthouse from South Neptune Island, and the restored steam tug, Yelta. With changing exhibitions and special events, there is always something new to see at the South Australian Maritime Museum.

In 2020 you can visit all your favourite Play School characters as we are hosting Happy Birthday Playschool: Celebrating 50 Years, a travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia developed in collaboration with the ABC.

Take a cardboard box, a paper hat, a whole lot of imagination, and you can be sailing the high seas, tackling mythical sea creatures as an explorer, a pirate or the captain of your own ship. This is the kind of creative learning and fun that the iconic Australian TV show Play School has offered for more than fifty years.

To celebrate, this landmark exhibition marks the program’s milestone 50th birthday and is on display at the South Australian Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide! One for young and old; it’s the exhibition that brings all your childhood memories alive.
